Southampton’s London 2012 Open Weekend activity takes place at the Soco Creative Hub, Bargate Shopping Centre, Southampton, Sunday 25 July 2010 – 11.30am to 4.30pm.

Get Your Culture Here! FREE! Is what it’s all about, celebrating the London 2012 Games by trying something new. We’ll have poetry, printing, music-production, film-making, dance, street-art, all for you to try. There’ll also be a puppet show  (but the puppets are not in the Creative Hub, there’ll be in nearby East Park).

‘Mr Southampton - London 2012 Open Weekiend’ tells the story of the event:

“There’s a couple of years to go until the London 2012 Olympics happen.

‘The Games’ are not just about Synchronised Swimming and Nordic Walking, you know! Well, we’ve gotta show they’re not by demonstrating how totally important culture is to our wellbeing as fully-formed and rounded (not rotund) individuals.

And the Cultural Olympiad may just be the way. It’s a celebration of culture, existing in a world parallel with the development of the sporty games. Let’s face it, the Ancient Greeks would be just as likely to spout philosophy as run a marathon (or eat one in the days before Snickers).

So the London 2012 Open Weekends came into being, pulling together loads of FREE cultural activities and events for the punter to enjoy each July.

That’s the official title: London 2012 Open Weekend. So if you see the word ‘London’, it doesn’t necessarily mean the event takes place in the capital.

Southampton’s had a good track record in the past couple of years, and in 2010, the city’s gonna showcase it’s latest cultural amenity: Soco’s fantastic Creative Hub, right in the heart of the Bargate Shopping Centre. Sunday 25 July is the day, 11.30am to 4,30pm.
